FOOD FOREST

The Food Forest covers more than 20 acres and, together with the Orchard, forms approximately 25 acres of the approximately 400-acre Vast Harvest Permaculture property near Girvan.

Approximately 23 swales extend about 2.5 to 3 kilometres across the landscape. By following the contours of the land, they help slow runoff and allow rainwater to soak into the soil.

The original design aimed for up to roughly 1,000 edible species across canopy, sub-canopy, shrub, ground-cover and subterranean layers, with deliberate support for moss and underground mycelial systems. The current species total may be lower than the original plan and has not been presented as an audited count.
